Certified Advanced Ecotourism

Broken River Mountain Resort is proud to have been certified as an Advanced Ecotourism operator by Ecotourism Australia. The ECO Certification program is a globally recognized brand which assists travellers within Australia to choose and experience a genuine and authentic tour, attraction, cruise or accommodation that is environmentally, socially and economically sustainable.

Certified Advanced Ecotourism is awarded to Australia’s leading and most innovative ecotourism products, which provide guests with an opportunity to learn more about the environment with operators who are committed to achieving best practice by using resources wisely, contributing to the conservation of the environment and helping local communities. The certification allows industry, local communities and travellers to Australia to distinguish those operators who have made a commitment to providing tourism products that are environmentally and socially sustainable.

Climate Change Action

Climate Change poses one of the greatest threats to the biodiversity of the Rainforests and Reef environments. Even small changes in average global temperatures will have a major impact on natural environments. Global warming could decrease the habitat of many endemic species which live in the rainforests and poses a threat to coral reefs, as warming seas can trigger coral bleaching.

At Broken River Mountain Resort we have implemented strategies to tackle climate change by reducing our carbon emissions.

Some examples of this action include:

  • We have an Environmental Sustainability Policy
  • We minimize waste, recycle and we use recycled products and materials wherever possible We minimize and track our emissions carbon footprint using the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority emissions calculator
  • Our vehicles are serviced regularly to maintain optimal fuel efficiency
  • We choose to purchase a percentage of electricity as Green Power. Green Power is drawn by Ergon from three renewable energy sources – Solar Power, Wind and Hydro.

Encouraging our Guests to reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions

When travelling, we encourage our guests to ensure their environmental practices in everyday life are maintained away from home and to use local energy and water efficiently. Check soaps or detergents are biodegradable. Never litter and recycle where possible.

Visitors to Australia can choose to offset their travel emissions through organisations such as Climate Friendly, which provide emissions calculators for a range of activities. While travelling, we encourage our guests to choose to support tourism operators who have achieved the Ecotourism certification logo. Ecotourism Australia Certification allows travellers to Australia to identify and support operators who meet the benchmark and so ensure that tourism products have minimal impact on the environment.
